Openly Pretending but Concealing Her Feelings, Stephen Curry’s Mother Revealed the “Resentful” Reality of her Challenging Period in Matrimony: “I Do Not Desire to be Identified as an NBA Spouse”.
Marriage to an NBA player is not all glitz and glamour. While it may appear picture-perfect from the outside, the inner battles and challenges faced by individuals in this position often go unnoticed. Sonya Curry, the mother of 4x NBA Champion Stephen Curry, knows this all too well. After being married to Charlotte Hornets icon Dell Curry for 33 years, Sonya decided to break free from his shadow and reveal her true self to the world. In order to do so, she penned a memoir that delves into her personal struggles and hardships.
In a recent interview following the release of her book, Sonya candidly discussed the constant pressure of living in the public eye. She shared the difficulties she faced with the unwanted attention and the burden of societal expectations that weighed heavily on her shoulders.
Sonya Curry’s experiences shed light on the challenges faced by the Curry family, who are often referred to as the “First NBA Family” due to their immense popularity within the league. These struggles are detailed in her memoir, aptly titled ‘Fierce Love: A Memoir of Family, Faith, and Purpose’.

During a conversation with Carlette Christmas about her book, Sonya shared how the public’s attention had a profound effect on her. She explained that while people perceive her family’s glamorous public image, they have no idea about the struggles she faced behind closed doors. She described nights spent crying in the closet, dealing with difficult situations while keeping a brave face for the world. Sonya expressed frustration at the expectations placed upon her family, feeling like they were forced into a mold they never asked for. She admitted that at times, she felt bitter and started making poor choices, as she questioned her role as an NBA wife.
However, Sonya also revealed that her faith and spirituality played a crucial role in helping her overcome these challenging times. When she was feeling lost and making regretful decisions, she turned to God and found solace. It was a transformative experience for her, leading her to focus on raising her children and strengthening her relationship with the Lord. As a result, Sonya not only successfully raised three talented children but also found her purpose in life. She is now not just a mother but also a successful author, educator, and the founder of a Montessori School.
